FATLAD Portrush is going to set things alight in the Irish triathlon community. An evening start to make preparing much easier, set in a town and with family entertainment and music to ensure a good crowd of spectators and a great atmosphere – this is the way triathlons should be
The 750m sea swim takes place just off West Strand round a triangular course. Upon exiting the water competitors cross the beach and run up a few steps to the grassy transition area.
Leaving transition triathletes ride a 10km loop out towards Portstewart and back, completing 2 loops before returning to transition and swapping their bikes for running shoes.
The 5km run begins with a climb up out of West Strand and continues along the coastal path. While this may be one of the most scenic runs in the country, as close to the rocky cliffs and sea as you can get, it’s also an interesting run with many steep undulations and twists and turns. After 2.5km runners turn for home along the road which should feel much easier!
Swim: Sea, triangular
